Sponsored by the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington (IFC). An evening of small group dialogue designed by and for DC area young adults from a variety of faith traditions (as well as those from multi-faith and no faith backgrounds) who are dedicated to building interfaith relationships with peers and allies. The dialogue cafe is open to those between the ages 18-39. Our goal is to promote interfaith and inter-cultural understanding and to more broadly build a stronger network of local allies across communities in service to our region.
Doors open at 6 pm; Program to begin at 6:30. Registration fee includes the cost of a vegetarian meal (plus service fees). Non-alcoholic beverages may be purchased onsite.
About the Dialogue Topic
Welcoming in the Digital Age: Fostering a sense of belonging in the world of social media
Through digital and social media, we are more connected than ever before, and simultaneously, more isolated. Some express concern about the deterioration of conversation as we spend more time looking down at our screens than up at the people we’re talking to. According to Rev. Jennifer Bailey, executive director of the Faith Matters Network and a Public Voices Fellow of The OpEd Project, the problem is that we do not give ourselves permission to talk about the things that truly matter and this can lead to a sense of aloneness.
Talking about things that truly matter can tap into our “common humanity”: the joys and struggles that are part of the human experience in spite of the social divisions that exist. The dialogue provides an opportunity to do just that by exploring stories of courage, vulnerability, celebration and community.
